That's when I just received a request from one of the development teams to have a custom-composed trailer scored, edited, and mixed for Monday.
That's ridiculous. But I'm such an industrious little worker that my answer was - as always - "No problem!"
How do you say that it is a problem? It still needs to be done. I will do the job. Am I supposed to make people view me as a grumpy employee while I do it just because their request is unreasonable? Or if I make it clear once that it's unreasonable will they stop making unreasonable requests? Unlikely.
It's a no-win situation.
What would they have done if I'd left for the night already? Nevermind. I know the answer to that. I've been called at home before.

Not to be a negative Nancy, but I'm not so sure it's so inhumanely unreasonable to ask you to do a rush job over the weekend. Could they have given you more notice? Of course. But we all know that far too many people are last minute on crap like this. I had four years of that kind of shit when I was at the Firm in LA.
But almost any job springs this kind of crap on you now and again, and it's just part of working for the man (and this comes from a dude who has similarly been stuck working in the office all weekend, and will be working again all day tomorrow, ending up with about an 80-hour work week this week).
Yeah I wasn't going to say anything because it doesn't change any bum-out you're feeling but I work every weekend. In fact, this weekend I'm working double. I'm up at 5:30 am with a last-minute rush job before a big conference on monday. I'll work until probably 4 and then switch to an overwhelming pile of photos to clean up, a bunch of contracts to go over and manage, and whatever else my never-empty dry erase board tells me is the most urgent. I haven't had a day off in 2007 yet (ie. no weekends either) and I have used every vacation I get to work other jobs for the last 2 years in a row. I'm not complaining or discounting your feeling at 6:45pm yesterday. Mainly, I'm letting you know that everyone's in your position sometimes. In fact, most are in worse. There's people who at that very same minute of the day yesterday got called in this weekend to pick up someone's shift at 7-11.
So count yourself lucky. You're working your dream job and you only need to go back one weekend in your blog to find time off for a garage sale and a weekend before that to find you in your pajamas playing video games.
Not that any of this helps when you're feeling overworked this weekend.
